Metal Yoga with Jessica Dowden at YOCO Yoga Collective

For Jessica Dowden, my fabulous partner and yoga teacher at YOCO Yoga Collective, the fusion of heavy music and mindful movement grew out of her own journey of healing and transformation. What started with blasting metal before class became a practice that helps release energy, transform emotion, and build strength from the inside out.

Jessica first fell in love with metal music as a teenager, drawn to its raw power and emotional intensity. Years later, during a difficult time in her life, she found yoga — and began bringing the two together in a way that felt honest and liberating. Her vision was simple: combine the music that had carried her through tough moments with the practice that taught her how to transform pain into resilience.

In 2016, Metal Yoga came alive in Pittsburgh. What began as an unconventional experiment quickly drew a packed room of people curious to try something bold and different. The class isn’t just about poses (asanas) or playlists — it’s about permission: permission to move how you need, to shake off what doesn’t serve you, and to turn chaos into catharsis.

Today, Metal Yoga remains a vibrant part of YOCO’s class offerings — an energetic blend of sound and strength that honors both music and movement as tools for emotional release and personal power. Whether you’re a die-hard metal fan or just curious to try something new, Metal Yoga is an experience that encourages you to show up fully and leave feeling stronger than you arrived.
